H.M.S. Pinafore & Trial by Juryby Gilbert & Sullivan |
Trial by Jury:
Financially aware Angelina sues Edwin for Breach of Promise. She seeks to maximise her loss "I love him with fervour unceasing": he to minimise it "I'm sure I would thrash her, perhaps I would kick her", but a susceptible judge resolves all amicably.
HMS Pinafore:
Able Seaman Ralph loves (and is loved by) his captain's daughter, Josephine, but their difference in rank would appear to make their love hopeless. To make matters worse, Josephine's hand is sought by the First Lord of the Admiralty, Sir Joseph Porter, KCB, but, as the bumboat woman says "Things are seldom what they seem", and all is resolved with a typical, if unlikely, Gilbertian twist. |
